Spain will this week complete training for ten Ukrainian Leopard 2A4 tank crew members and technical personnel at the Toledo Coordination Training Centre in Zaragoza.

This was reported by the press service of the Spanish Ministry of Defense on its social media.

For 4 weeks, the Ukrainian military underwent tactical and technical training, the formation of operational units, and the implementation of vehicle maintenance tasks.

These courses were launched following the official provision of obligations by the Spanish government to promote Ukraine’s defense as part of the transfer of tanks and military personnel.

The Ukrainian military arrived in Spain on February 16, 2023 and will return home next Wednesday, March 15.

The contingent, which is formed at the Zaragoza training facilities, consists of 40 tankers (four per tank) and 15 maintenance personnel.

Military personnel already have combat experience in the use of tanks, so during the training the main focus was on the technical characteristics of Leopard 2 tanks. As for tactical training, it was originally designed to form operational and consolidated crews.

Thanks to the training carried out by the Spanish army over the past four weeks, the Ukrainian military will be able to operate vehicle combat systems and perform maintenance tasks for various mechanical and electronic components.

In total, the Spanish authorities pledged to transfer, as part of military assistance, ten Leopard 2A4 tanks taken from long-term storage bases. The country will also ensure their repair and modernization.

The restoration of tanks is carried out by the Spanish Santa Bárbara Sistemas defense enterprise, which specializes in the modernization and maintenance of armored vehicles. It is known that the plant is currently working on the preparation of the first six Leopard 2A4 tanks at its facilities in Alcala de Guadaira in Seville.

Tanks arrived there for recovery in early February, they were brought from the Casetas armored vehicle storage base located in Zaragoza.

In addition, on March 9, the Polish government also completed the training of Ukrainian tankers. Together with the crews, Poland handed over 10 Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine.
