The Spanish government has allocated significant funds to maintain its F/A-18 fighter jets in combat readiness.
The Spanish media Actualidad Aeroespacial reported that the contract for the support of the aircraft was signed for a total of EUR 40 million.
The budgetary funds will be used to purchase various equipment and materials specifically for the F-18, increasing their operational capabilities in the Air Force.
This funding is part of a broader effort to modernize and sustain the current fleet, ensuring that these aircraft remain reliable and capable.
The approval of these funds by the Council of Ministers is an important step in officially launching procurement procedures in accordance with government regulations.
This includes publishing contract details on a contract platform where interested parties can follow the tender process.
The Spanish Air Force has been using F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets since the mid-1980s when it decided to replace its old F-4C Phantom and F-5 Freedom Fighters.
The initial procurement included 72 single-seat F-18As and 12 two-seat F-18Bs directly from the US Navy.
During their service, the Spanish F/A-18s have participated in various NATO operations, reflecting their significant role in Spain’s defense strategy.
Over the years, the aircraft have undergone several upgrades to improve their operational capabilities and extend their service life.
These upgrades included a mid-life refresh with advanced avionics, improved communications systems, and compatibility with new weapons, including integrating the Taurus KEPD 350 long-range cruise missile and upgrades to their electronic warfare systems.
The Spanish Air Force is transitioning to newer aircraft, such as the Eurofighter Typhoon. However, the F/A-18 still plays an important role in their current fleet, especially given its proven combat reliability and versatility in a variety of missions.
