South Korea plans to deploy its own missile defense system, LAMD, similar to Israel’s Iron Dome, by 2029.
The system is designed to protect Seoul and nearby areas from threats posed by North Korea’s long-range artillery, according to The Korea Times.
Military officials have moved the deployment timeline up by two years from the original schedule, citing the rapid growth of North Korea’s multiple launch rocket system capabilities.
The LAMD system consists of a radar station, tactical communication systems, launchers, and interceptor missiles. It is designed to simultaneously detect and destroy incoming enemy projectiles flying at low altitudes.
Total investment in the development of this technology is expected to reach $558 million by 2030.
The South Korea’s Cheongung-II air defense system has demonstrated high effectiveness in real combat conditions, protecting the airspace of the United Arab Emirates.
During the repelling of aerial attacks from Iran, the system achieved a 96% interception success rate.
