Republican senators are calling on U.S. President Donald Trump to restore military and intelligence assistance to Ukraine, The Hill reports.
They urge him to reverse his decision to suspend military and intelligence assistance to Ukraine, warning that a prolonged pause could weaken Ukraine’s combat capabilities.
They acknowledge the president’s authority to temporarily halt weapons supplies to assess the war, put pressure on NATO allies, and create conditions for possible peace talks.
However, the lawmakers also warn that an extended suspension could have serious consequences, weakening Ukraine on the battlefield and undermining its position in negotiations with Russia.
They are also pushing for an immediate resumption of intelligence sharing, asking what are the strategic benefits of withholding critical battlefield data from Ukraine.
Senator Tom Tillis suggested the pause might be a “negotiation tactic,” while Senator Susan Collins opposed it outright, emphasizing that Ukrainians are the ones shedding blood in the war.
Senate Republican Leader John Thune described the halt as temporary and expressed hope for a peace deal that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Senator Lindsey Graham and several of his colleagues, including John Cornyn and Mike Rounds, also expressed concern about the suspension of intelligence sharing and assistance.
On March 4, 2025, it became known that U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the suspension of all military aid to Ukraine. This applies to weapons that have not yet been sent, the provision of which was agreed upon during the Biden administration. And even weapons that have already been sent from the US and are heading to the Ukrainian border.
Militarnyi reported that the U.S. suspended intelligence sharing, including access to Maxar satellite imagery, and tied the resumption of support to Ukraine’s willingness to enter negotiations with Russia.
