The United States has developed the SearchCam search camera that helps automatic turrets quickly detect and destroy enemy drones.
Allen Control Systems reported that it has recently tested this system.
SearchCam provides passive detection and object recognition through an internal threat library.
The system is equipped with 16 cameras to detect targets and send signals to the turret. It can switch between conventional and thermal imaging.
SearchCam has become an alternative to active radars. Passive detection allows for remaining invisible to enemy radars without revealing the actual location.
An active radar emits a radio signal and detects a target by its reflection, while simultaneously disguising itself.
A passive detection system does not emit any signals and only receives the target’s own or extraneous radiation, while maintaining concealment.
“The low profile does not jeopardize your geolocation, and this is what allows any unit to build a deeply echeloned defense,” the company said.
The SearchCam connects to the Bullfrog autonomous machine gun, which has systems for detecting, identifying, tracking and engaging drones.
Bullfrog is an autonomous gun turret capable of detecting, identifying and neutralizing enemy unmanned aerial vehicles.
The unit can be armed with M240, M2, M230, M134 machine guns or non-kinetic weapons, including a laser ‘dazzler’.
The Bullfrog weighs only 75 kg without ammunition, which allows it to be installed on a variety of vehicles. The system was previously tested on the Bradley infantry fighting vehicle.
