The Chancellor of Germany announced the creation of a coalition of allies of Ukraine for long-range weapons.

Olaf Scholz said that three countries had agreed to intensify cooperation in military support for Ukraine in this regard.

“We are creating a new coalition for long-range rocket artillery,” Scholz said at a press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Berlin.

This is the first meeting of the leaders of the Weimar Triangle since Tusk became the Prime Minister of Poland again.

On the eve of the meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron warned Western powers against showing any signs of weakness toward Russia, reiterating his position that the deployment of Western troops to Ukraine cannot be ruled out.

The Chancellor added that allies had also begun purchasing even more weapons on the global market to support Ukraine.

Scholz also said that the interest from the frozen Russian assets would finance the purchase of weapons.

Long-range Taurus missile

At the same time, the German parliament, the Bundestag, did not support the supply of long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine at its meeting on March 14.

On the eve of the vote, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated during a debate in the lower house of the German parliament on March 13 that he did not support the supply of long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine. He stated that for him, this was a line he did not want to cross.

He said beforehand that, of course, it was also about Ukraine being able to carry out defensive military strikes at a range of 80 km, 100 km or even 150 km.

Sources of the German edition of T-Online said that the reason for the refusal to provide Taurus to Ukraine lay in the peculiarities of the guidance system of these missiles.

At a closed meeting of the Bundestag Defense Committee, Bundeswehr Inspector General Carsten Breuer revealed the main difficulties of using the Taurus. He noted that the missile required a specialized computer system available only in Germany.
