A Ukrainian drone strike on the Engels 2 airbase in Russia’s Saratov region has resulted in the destruction of an ammunition depot that stored bombs and missiles.
Satellite images, shared by Radio Liberty journalist Mike Eckel on the social media platform X, show the aftermath of the attack.
The photos reveal the complete destruction of all warehouse buildings on the depot’s grounds, along with several craters where open ammunition was stored.
Traces of fire can also be seen around the site.
The strike occurred early on March 20, when explosions were heard at Engels 2. Local residents reported heavy smoke rising from the area.
A video later emerged showing a powerful secondary detonation that continued for hours.
Reports also stated that residents living near the Engels airfield were evacuated following the attack. People in Saratov, located about 15 km away, also heard the explosions.
This airfield serves as the base for Russian strategic bombers that conduct missile strikes on Ukraine, so it is believed that the strike may have also destroyed Kh-101 cruise missiles stored there.
This marks the latest in a series of attacks on the Engels airbase and its infrastructure. In January 2025, Ukrainian drones struck a fuel storage facility used by Russian strategic bombers at Engels.
The first attack occurred on January 8, 2025, when explosions rocked the Kristall oil depot, part of the Rosrezerv complex, causing a fire that burned for five days.
A second drone strike took place on January 14, sparking another fire at the facility after at least two hits.
These operations were carried out by the 14th Separate UAV Regiment of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, in coordination with other Ukrainian defense units.
