The Swedish defense company Saab is offering its own radar detection aircraft to the Nordic countries.
Industry and government representatives announced this, as quoted by The Financial Times.
The company is offering its GlobalEye Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft, which could serve as an alternative to American planes for potential European customers.
In addition, Sweden is currently the only European country that carries out the full production cycle of AWACS equipment and integrates it onto its own aircraft, such as the Saab 340/2000, or onto foreign platforms, according to the customer’s preference.
The GlobalEye aircraft could significantly complement the air capabilities of countries such as Norway, Denmark, and Finland, providing a large and continuous radar field for early detection, command, and targeting.
This is especially relevant for patrolling and detecting Russian ships and aircraft in the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean.
In the event of purchasing GlobalEye AWACS aircraft, their fleet would be able to cover most of Northern Europe, including the Arctic islands of Svalbard, Iceland, and Greenland.
The Erieye radar system, installed on the GlobalEye aircraft, is capable of tracking airborne targets at a range of 650 km and ground targets at 425 km. Saab notes that the radar, thanks to its AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) technology, is sensitive enough to track drones at distances ranging from 100 km to 600 km.
The Erieye radar system, developed by the Swedish company Saab Electronic Defence Systems, provides a 300-degree coverage, detecting airborne and maritime targets.
The system is used by the air forces of countries such as Sweden, Brazil, Pakistan, Thailand, Greece, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. The installation platform varies depending on the customer’s needs, making potential exports highly flexible.
The first step in purchasing Swedish radar detection aircraft is likely to be taken by France, which is currently in negotiations with Saab to buy their aircraft, which is set to replace the American E-3F.
Militarnyi previously reported that Saab had signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration for the delivery of a third GlobalEye Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft.
