Russia massively attacked Ukraine with Iranian-made Shahed-136 kamikaze drones.

On the morning of Monday, October 17, the capital and other regions were attacked.

Kyiv woke up from a series of loud uffexplosions. This happened after an air alert was announced at 06:15 a.m. throughout the Kyiv region and a number of regions of Ukraine. According to eyewitnesses, the first explosion in the capital was heard around 06:35 a.m., and several more followed.

A fire broke out in a non-residential building at the site of the hits in the Shevchenkivskyi district, and several residential buildings were damaged, the mayor of the city, Vitali Klitschko, said.

After the first explosions, eyewitnesses reported that Russian drones continued to fly to the capital. Several kamikaze drones were shot down by air defence over Kyiv region. Mayor Vitali Klitschko released a photo featuring the wreckage of one of the Shahed-136 (“Geran-2”) that attacked the capital this morning.

According to the Kyiv City Military Administration, as of 9:00 a.m., four hits were recorded in Kyiv.

“The enemy continues to attack. A residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district was hit. Currently, the information about the victims is being specifed,” the statement reads.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command reports that nine Shahed-136 kamikaze drones were neutralized by anti-aircraft missile units and fighter aircraft in the area of responsibility of the Air command “Center”, which is the northern and central regions of the country. Anti-aircraft defense of the Ground Forces in this direction destroyed at least two Shahed drones. According to the detailed information, all kamikaze drone attacks, in particular on the capital, were carried out from the south. Also today, 15 enemy kamikaze drones were neutralized in the south, and 3 cruise missiles were shot down in the east.

“On October 17, from 3:30 a.m. to 6:50 a.m., the forces and means of air defense of the Air command “South” shot down fifteen drones: six over Odesa region and nine over Mykolaiv region,” the Armed Forces of Ukraine said.

In total, 26 Shahed-136 were neutralized in the southern direction during the night from October 16 to 17.

The enemy also attacked critical infrastructure in the eastern direction with cruise missiles of various types. Three missiles were destroyed by the anti-aircraft missile units of the Air Command “East”.

According to OC “South”, during the night, three Russian drones hit objects of industrial infrastructure and a pharmaceutical warehouse in Mykolaiv. A fire broke out at the sites of hits.
