A Russian Su-30SM2 fighter jet conducted a show-of-force flight near NATO airspace while carrying cluster munitions and anti-ship missiles.

According to the specialized Soniashnyk Telegram channel, in late January, Spanish EF-18M fighters deployed in the Baltic region under NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission intercepted the Russian aircraft. The jet was armed with two Kh-31A anti-ship missiles and two RBK-500 cluster bombs.

It is worth noting that the Russian fighter was not carrying any air-to-air missiles, which are normally required for self-defense or offensive operations.

Overall, the presence of live combat weapons on Russian aircraft conducting provocative maneuvers near NATO airspace is extremely rare.

In November, during the escort of a high-value Tu-134UBL aircraft, Russian Navy Su-30 fighters were not carrying any missiles.

This practice had been maintained for a long time to minimize the risk of escalation and as a form of precaution to ensure that a pilot would not panic in a critical situation and use weapons.

However, now, likely to increase psychological pressure on NATO pilots and amplify the impact of provocations, the Russian side appears to be resorting to demonstrations of force.

Meanwhile, the possibility of a direct confrontation is still ruled out on Russia’s part, as the aircraft remains unequipped with air-to-air missiles.

Kh-31A

The Kh-31A is a tactical supersonic anti-ship missile designed to engage surface combatants of various classes, up to and including destroyers, as well as amphibious and transport vessels operating individually or in convoys.

The Kh-31A can be employed from any carrier aircraft capable of carrying the appropriate pod or equipped with an onboard targeting system.

The missile can engage targets from 5 to 70 kilometers away. It should be noted that launching such missiles from these distances against U.S. warships would be outright suicidal.

Target destruction is achieved either by detonating the warhead after penetrating the hull in a direct hit or by fragmentation and high-explosive effects if the missile passes over the target.

RBK-500

The RBK-500 is a Soviet-made 500-kg cluster aerial bomb designed to strike personnel, lightly armored vehicles, equipment parked in open areas, and infrastructure across a wide area.

The bomb consists of a container that opens in midair and disperses dozens or hundreds of submunitions, depending on the variant.

There are versions equipped with fragmentation, anti-tank shaped-charge, incendiary, and antipersonnel submunitions, including RBK-500 variants with PTAB-1M or SHOAB-0.5 bombs.
