Security measures are being stepped up in Finland because of Russian spies who have become more active during the deployment of NATO troops.
According to a recent report by the Finnish Defense Forces’ military intelligence, Russia is particularly interested in the activities of international forces and the development of NATO headquarters and force structures in Finland, Yle reported.
The deployment of NATO troops to Rovaniemi and Sodankylä was reported last week.
The Finnish security police Supo (Suojelupoliisi) also stated that spies are interested in what kind of NATO equipment will be deployed in Finland. NATO membership has increased interest in Finland not only from Russia but also from China.
Supo, for example, has placed the port of Kemi, through which NATO soldiers and equipment arrive for major international exercises held in Lapland, under surveillance.
The same port is used by the Chinese shipping company Cosco, whose vessels, according to the port director, are under special surveillance.
Supo shared with Yle that in recent years, much attention has been paid to protecting ports, as well as other critical infrastructure.
Attempts at reconnaissance using drones are regularly observed around Finnish garrisons.
The fact that the Lapland air base in Rovaniemi has not held an open house for several years is also evidence of the tightening of security measures.
The new F-35 fighter jets will enter service at the Rovaniemi air base.
The contracts cover the delivery of multi-role fighters in the F-35A Block 4 configuration in 2025-2030.
Finland is currently constructing a two-hundred-kilometer wall on the border with the Russian Federation ahead of schedule.
