Russian propagandists, who cover the progress of hostilities between the Russian invasion forces and the Defense Forces of Ukraine, boast with 152-mm D-1 towed howitzers used by the Russians.
This Soviet howitzer was created during the Second World War.
Due to the significant losses of the Russian invaders in equipment and weapons, they have to use obsolete weapons that have not been used for a long time and, in the best case, were in storage.
One of the Russian propagandists decided to showcase how the Russians are fighting in Ukraine.
His video features the D-1 howitzer, which Russian invasion forces have started to use recently in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine.
According to the propagandist, the D-1 1943 howitzer, which is behind him in the video, was made when the invader’s grandfather was 10 years old.
“If anyone thought that in the 21st century war would be fought with blasters, then they were wrong. Here, please, D-1. Whatever the case, we hit the enemy with what we have. We combine the latest technologies, copters, with Stalin’s guns,” the Russian invader said.
At the same time, the propagandist did not say anything about the reliability of these howitzers, or about their effectiveness in comparison with the artillery of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The real condition of D-1 after many years of preservation is also unknown. After all, these howitzers were produced from 1943 to 1949 and were used at the end of the Second World War.
The first D-1 1943 howitzers, with which Russian gunners were outfitted, were spotted on the territory of the Luhansk region last month. The convoy of the D-1 howitzers was spotted in the area of the village of Alchevsk, which has been occupied since 2014.
The D-1 howitzer was developed in an urgent way during the WWII years by the design bureau under the leadership of Petrov. The two-stage gun carriage, shield, and anti-recoil mechanism of the 122mm М-30 howitzer were combined with the 152 mm М-10 (model 1938) howitzer barrel, which allowed the use of М-10 ammunition with variable propellant power.
The ammunition of the howitzer included separate loading shots with fragmentation, high-explosive fragmentation and concrete-breaking projectiles. The range of the high-explosive fragmentation projectile was 12,400 m.
The ammunition for the howitzer included separate loading rounds with fragmentation, high-explosive incendiary and concrete-piercing shells. The range of the high-explosive fragmentation shell was 12,400 m.
Nevertheless, for the conditions of modern hostilities, this howitzer is outdated. It has insufficient accuracy and range for counter-battery warfare with modern Western artillery systems in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
