Russian electronic warfare systems diverted a Ukrainian drone into Finnish airspace.
This was reported by Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, in response to a request from Militarnyi.
The ministry noted that it is in communication with the Finnish side regarding this incident.
They assured their partners that the drone was by no means intentionally directed toward Finland, and that the most likely cause of its deviation from course was Russian electronic warfare systems.
“Ukraine is already sharing all necessary information to clarify the circumstances,” Tykhyi said.
At the same time, Finnish representatives reacted with understanding to the incident. Both sides are convinced that the root cause of the incident is, first and foremost, Russian aggression against Ukraine, which creates new security challenges for the entire region.
As a reminder, on the morning of March 29, the Finnish Air Force scrambled two F-18C Hornet fighter jets due to several objects approaching the country’s territorial waters.
It later became known that one drone crashed north of the city of Kouvola, and another—east of it.
Police reported that no one was injured as a result of the incident; the crash sites were cordoned off for investigation.
The Air Force clarified that the pilots visually identified one of the objects as a Ukrainian AN-196 drone south of Kouvola.
The fighter jets did not open fire to avoid collateral damage on the ground. The crash of another drone near the city of Espoo has also been confirmed.
It is worth noting that on that day, March 29, Ukrainian strike drones for the third time in a week attacked the Russian oil terminal in Ust-Luga, located approximately 160 kilometers southeast of Kouvola, resulting in an additional fire breaking out on the facility’s grounds.
