One of Russia’s most mysterious shortwave radio stations, UVB-76, better known as Zhuzhzhalka or Doomsday Radio, has temporarily stopped broadcasting.
The shutdown was reported by both Russian media, including RIA Novosti, and international outlets such as UNITED24.
According to them, the neighboring power substation that powered the transmitter was damaged during a UAV attack.
“There will be no broadcasting temporarily. The problem is a power outage due to a drone strike,” the radio station administrators said on their social media pages.
At the same time, users claim that they sometimes continue to hear a characteristic low-frequency buzzing sound, the main ‘constant background’ of the station, which is rarely interrupted even in emergency situations.
For more than half a century, UVB-76 has been broadcasting a continuous hum, occasionally emitting fragmented voice or digital messages, the purpose of which remains unknown.
Researchers speculate that the station is connected to Russian military communication systems and may operate from the Moscow, Leningrad, or Pskov regions, but there is no confirmation.
The purpose of the station remains the subject of numerous theories, ranging from a backup channel for mobilization signals to a means of controlling radio frequencies in the Russian military.
The failure caused by the drone attack has, for the first time in a long time, intensified discussions about the real role of the Zhuzhzhalka in the command and communication systems of the Russian army.
As a reminder, recently, with the help of civilian equipment: researchers from the United States tapped military satellites.
