On the morning of Saturday, August 19, Russian troops fired at the center of Chernihiv with a missile.
As a result of the enemy strike, there are dead and wounded, including children.
The invaders targeted the Drama Theater, which resulted in the destruction of the building’s roof and a fire. Other buildings near Chernihiv’s central square were also damaged.
The head of the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, Viacheslav Chaus, reported that the Russians had used a ballistic missile.
Ihor Klymenko, Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, said that as of 2 p.m., seven people were killed. Currently, 117 people have been reported injured.
Also, 90 wounded people sought medical assistance. Among them are 10 police officers and 12 children. Twenty-five people were hospitalized.
In particular, it was reported that a 12-year-old girl in serious condition was urgently transported to Kyiv by ambulance.
President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is on a visit to Sweden, wrote about the Russian crime.
“A square, a polytechnic university, a theater. An ordinary Saturday, which Russia turned into a day of pain and loss. There are dead, there are wounded. My condolences to those who have lost loved ones!” he wrote about the attack on the center of Chernihiv.
Rescue teams, medics and police are working at the scene. The city center is partially blocked. Firefighters have extinguished the fire and are now dismantling the rubble of the building damaged by the missile strike.
After the strike on the center of Chernihiv, it turned out that the theater hit by the Russian missile was hosting a drone exhibition, which had been announced in advance.
The organizers of the event claim that the exhibition was agreed with the city authorities, namely the military civilian administration. According to them, the specific venue was only disclosed to registered and verified participants a few hours before the event.
