Russia launched a medium-range ballistic missile, Oreshnik, at a suburb of Lviv around midnight on January 8.

This was confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Defence. The Ukrainian Air Force also verified the use of the ballistic missile.

On January 8, around 11:30 p.m., a missile threat was declared across Ukraine due to the potential launch of Russian ballistic missiles from the Kapustin Yar test site in the Astrakhan region.

The strike on infrastructure targets in Lviv occurred at 11:47 p.m.

“The aerial target was moving at a speed of about 13,000 kilometers per hour along a ballistic trajectory,” reported the Air Command ‘West’ of the Ukrainian Air Force.

They emphasized that the type of missile used by Russian aggressors to attack the Ukrainian city will be determined after analyzing all of its components.

By the morning of January 9, the Ministry of Defence of the aggressor country stated in its Telegram channel that Russia had struck Ukraine the previous night with a medium-range ballistic missile from the Oreshnik system.

Footage of the strike from individual guidance blocks, likely without warheads, has been published on social media. Therefore, the strike was purely kinetic.

Lviv Mayor Andrii Sadovyi reported in the morning that as a result of the missile attack, the automatic gas safety system was activated in the village of Rudno, part of the Lviv community.

“For safety reasons, gas supply has been temporarily suspended for 376 subscribers on several streets. This is not a network emergency – the system was triggered by the shockwave. Specialists are already on-site, checking the equipment. After that, gas will be restored,” said the city’s leader.

As previously reported, Russia first attacked Ukraine with the Oreshnik missile on November 21, 2024. The strike took place near the city of Dnipro.

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine reported last fall that the Russian Oreshnik ballistic missile system was destroyed during the night of July 8-9, 2024, at the Kapustin Yar test site. The operation was carried out jointly by personnel from the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine, and the Foreign Intelligence Service.
