The Golden Dome system, set to become the US’s strategic missile defense system, has caused concern among the nuclear club countries.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated during a briefing that the Golden Dome undermines strategic stability worldwide.
“The conceptual foundations of the aforementioned project demonstrate Washington’s complete and final refusal to recognize the inextricable link between strategic offensive and strategic defensive weapons, which is one of the pillars of strategic stability,” the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry claimed.
Zakharova called the concept of the future missile defense system a material manifestation of an extremely dangerous doctrine of preventive and, in essence, first strikes aimed at disarming the enemy.
She noted that the deployment of the Golden Dome satellite network, which will include elements for early warning of ICBM launches and their interception at an early stage of flight, will give new impetus to the development of means of pre-launch destruction of missile weapons and the infrastructure that ensures their use.
“The situation is further exacerbated by the fact that the ‘Golden Dome’ directly provides for a significant increase in the arsenal of means for conducting combat operations in space, including deploying interception systems in orbit,” Maria Zakharova stated.
The Chinese government shares the Russian position. Recently, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning called on the United States to abandon the development of the Golden Dome missile defense system.
“China expresses serious concern about this. We urge the United States to abandon developing and deploying a global missile defense system as soon as possible,” Mao Ning claimed, adding that this “undermines the global strategic balance and stability.”
She emphasized that the US plans “increase the risk of turning space into a battlefield and fuel an arms race.”
North Korea also sharply criticized the US project, stating that Washington “is stubbornly pursuing the militarization of space, claiming that those who dominate space can win future wars.”
The program “is a scenario for nuclear war in space that supports the US strategy of unipolar domination,” the official Korean Central News Agency reported on Tuesday, citing a memorandum from an institute affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Pyongyang.
President Donald Trump announced earlier in May that the US had started work on the Golden Dome project. He promised to complete the project by January 2029. You can read more about it in the article “America’s Golden Dome — the return of Star Wars?”
