Romania has taken delivery of its first modernized IAR-330L helicopter, a localized version of the French SA 330 Puma, produced by the local manufacturer IAR Brașov.
The 57th Air Base of the Romanian Air Force, named after Captain Constantin Cantacuzino, announced the handover.
The delivery is part of the second phase of Romania’s IAR-330L restoration and modernization program, under which a total of seven helicopters will be upgraded.
“Drawing on lessons learned from operational missions and adapting to the evolving security environment, this program underscores the Romanian Air Force’s commitment to maintaining a mature and responsive equipment policy,” the airbase stated.
During the first phase of the upgrade, the helicopters were fitted with BrightNite night vision systems from Israel’s Elbit Systems, along with a modern avionics suite.
The second phase, carried out at the IAR SA facility in Brașov, involved the integration of Elbit Systems’ Spectro XR electro-optical station.
This multispectral camera system combines optical and multiple infrared channels into a single module, enabling operations in both daylight and adverse weather conditions.
The system also features a laser rangefinder, target tracking capabilities, and AI-powered image processing.
The upgraded helicopters will also be equipped with new electronic warfare systems, “which are capable of responding to any challenges and threats, increasing resilience and survivability in a hostile environment.”
Militarnyi recently reported that the Portuguese Ministry of Defense transferred eight SA-330 Puma helicopters to Ukraine as part of a military assistance package at the end of 2024.
The helicopters, which had been in storage since 2012 and put up for sale in 2014, feature advanced fire control systems and radar capabilities, including the ORB-31 X-band radar.
This system enables target detection on the sea surface, identification, and fire control for engaging both surface and underwater threats.
The radar can also provide weather updates and navigation support.
