Romania Ready to Offer Its Bases to NATO to Ensure Ukraine’s Security

Romania is ready to provide its military bases to NATO allies as part of future security guarantees for Ukraine.

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated this during a broadcast on Antena 1, as quoted by the Agerpres news agency.

According to him, this could be his country’s contribution to efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace in Ukraine.

In response to a question about calls from European leaders for the U.S. to deploy F-35 fighter jets to Romania as part of security guarantees for Ukraine, Bolojan stated that, given the country’s NATO membership, its military bases can be used by forces of the Alliance countries, including the U.S. and other allies.

“Even today, air patrols are carried out from our airports, air surveillance is conducted to monitor the situation in the Black Sea, and joint military exercises are organized. So this can be, so to speak, Romania’s contribution to ensuring support for lasting peace in Ukraine – providing our military bases to NATO allies,” Bolojan said.

The Prime Minister of Romania also emphasized that the country will not send its troops to Ukraine as part of providing security guarantees.

On Thursday, August 21, the Romanian Ministry of Defense stated that the country “is a reliable and active ally in defending NATO’s eastern flank and remains committed to multidimensional and sustained support for Ukraine in close cooperation with NATO and the European Union.”
