Romania is inspecting the sites where a Russian Shahed attack drone that flew in from Ukraine on the night of September 8 could have crashed.

The Romanian Ministry of National Defense states that Russians have resumed drone attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure near the Romanian border.

During the night, residents in Tulcea and Constanța counties received RO-Alert notifications at 02:20 and 02:38, respectively.

At 02:25 a.m., two Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jets took off from the 86th Borcea Air Base to monitor the situation.

The radar surveillance system detected and tracked the trajectory of the drone, which entered Romanian airspace and left the territory towards Ukraine.

“According to the available data, there is a possibility of the existence of a strike zone on the territory of the country, in a deserted area, in the vicinity of the city of Periphery. The Ministry of National Defense forces have been conducting reconnaissance in the area since the morning with air assets and ground teams,” the Ministry stated.

Romania said it condemns Russia’s attacks against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.

The Ukrainian Air Force also reported that Russian Shahed attack drones violated Romanian airspace.

In total, on September 8, the Ukrainian Air Force shot down 15 Russian Shahed attack drones and one Kh-59 guided missile at night.

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană condemned Russia’s violation of the airspace of the Alliance member Romania, which resulted in a Russian drone flying into Romanian territory at night.

“NATO condemns Russia’s violation of Romanian airspace last night. While we have no information to indicate that Russia deliberately attacked the Allies, these actions are irresponsible and potentially dangerous,” Mr. Geoană stated.

The downing of Shahed drones in Romania has become a regular occurrence. In the summer, the wreckage of the Shahed drones used by Russia to attack the Odesa region on the night of July 25 was discovered on the territory of Romania.
