Romania has called on NATO to take action over the intrusion of Russian Shahed drones into the alliance’s airspace.

Romanian Defense Minister Angel Tîlvăr stated that NATO should take “powerful, coordinated” measures in response to such incidents when Russian missiles or drones fired at Ukraine enter the alliance’s airspace.

“The Bucharest Nine states are deeply concerned about the repeated intrusions of Russian drones and missiles into NATO airspace in Poland, Romania, Latvia, and the escalation of tensions on NATO’s eastern flank,” Tîlvăr said.

The Bucharest Nine, founded in 2015, includes Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia.

Tîlvăr added that it is necessary “to introduce a rotational model of air defense and integrated missile defense as soon as possible.”

The defense ministers of NATO’s eastern flank met in Bucharest on September 18.

Poland’s Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski stated that at a meeting of NATO defense ministers in October, the issue of shooting down drones that enter allied airspace will need to be considered.

“We have confirmed hybrid attacks on allies, as well as Belarus’ participation in Russia’s actions,” Zalewski said.

Russian Shahed drones have repeatedly flown into Romanian airspace and crashed there.

Because of these incidents, the Romanian Air Force has been forced to raise its fighter jets to monitor the air situation.

However, NATO says it has no evidence of a deliberate Russian attack on the Alliance.

“NATO condemns Russia’s violation of Romanian airspace overnight. While we have no information to suggest that Russia deliberately attacked Allies, these actions are irresponsible and potentially dangerous,” NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană stated on September 8.
