Rheinmetall has received additional major orders to deliver 155mm artillery ammunition. An international customer has placed two orders at the subsidiary Rheinmetall Denel Munition to supply extended range, full-bore (ERFB) 155 mm artillery ammunition.

The company’s press service announced the news on June 3.

The contracts will be fulfilled by Rheinmetall’s subsidiary, Rheinmetall Denel Munition. The value of the orders is estimated to be in the high double-digit million-dollar amount.

The order includes projectiles, propellants, and fuses.

According to the company, the latest orders result from rapidly rising international demand, triggered by the tense global security situation.

Rheinmetall is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of large-calibre ammunition. The Technology Corporation Rheinmetall has been increasing its production capacity since 2022, aiming to produce at least 1.1 million 155 mm artillery shells annually by 2027.

Like the entire Rheinmetall Corporation, Rheinmetall Denel Munition is constantly expanding its production capacities, as international supply capacities are unable to keep up with demand.

In early April, Rheinmetall signed an agreement to purchase the Hagedorn-NC plant, which specializes in producing nitrocellulose—a component used in ammunition manufacturing.

Until now, the plant produced goods for the civilian market; however, as part of the acquisition, its production capacity will be repurposed to meet military needs.

This purchase will enable the German defense giant to strengthen its manufacturing capabilities for producing materials used in various types of ammunition, including 155mm artillery shells.

In February, Reuters reported that Rheinmetall is converting two of its automotive plants in Berlin and Neuss to produce ammunition and other defense-related products.

The company stated that these facilities will not handle explosive materials but will focus on manufacturing mechanical components. It was also clarified that the plants will retain the capability to produce civilian goods.
