Rheinmetall books major order for 155mm artillery ammunition to Ukraine

Rheinmetall has booked a major order for 155mm artillery ammunition.

The framework agreement provides for the transfer to Ukraine of tens of thousands of L15 rounds as well as conventional 155mm Assegai shells for the German military.

The value of the contract has not been disclosed, but it is said to be in the lower three-digit million-euro range. Delivery is scheduled to take place in 2024.

This agreement is an addition to the contract signed in 2023 to supply hundreds of thousands of artillery shells to the ground forces, both to replace those transferred to Ukraine and to increase the overall reserve.

In addition to shells, the company will supply fuses and propelling charges.

The recently concluded framework agreement for 155mm artillery ammunition runs until 2029 and represents a gross potential order volume of around €1.2 billion. Moreover, it is noted that the contract for training ammunition was signed immediately after the contract for combat ammunition.

The company offers a wide range of artillery shells, both of its own design and jointly developed with the South African company Denel.

Among other products, Rheinmetall’s family of artillery ammunition includes the high-explosive DM121 shell, the DM125 smoke/obscurant projectile, and the DM702 SMArt sensor fuse munition (jointly developed with Diehl).

As Militarnyi previously reported, the Danish government is working to buy out the land under the former defense plant, which is planned to be used to produce ammunition.

The Defense Minister wants to speed up the process and make efforts to buy back the land on which the munitions plant in Elling, near Frederikshavn, used to be located.

After that, there is hope that the factory will be used again for the purpose for which it was built.
