Germany has delivered to Ukraine a new IRIS-T SLM air-defense system, supplemented by two integrated IRIS-T SLS launchers.
The transfer was announced by Ukraine’s 223rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment, which has already deployed the system and reported its first combat results.
Within several days of operation, the new unit intercepted nine Russian targets, including five Kh-101 cruise missiles, two Iskander-K missiles and two Shahed-131/136 drones.
Training for Ukrainian crews in Germany concluded in early November, after which the system was quickly sent to Ukraine.
This is the third IRIS-T delivery this year and the ninth SLM launcher Germany has provided since Russia’s full-scale invasion, German Aid to Ukraine said on X.
The system integrates IRIS-T SLS launchers — lighter and cheaper interceptors capable of engaging targets at ranges of up to 12 km and altitudes of up to 8 km.
They complement the SLM system, which operates at ranges of up to 40 km and altitudes of up to 20 km, creating a multi-layered defense.
SLS missiles are used primarily to intercept loitering munitions and reconnaissance drones due to their higher availability.
The 223rd Regiment described the combined IRIS-T SLM/SLS system as a “reliable and effective tool” that strengthens the protection of key facilities in multiple regions of Ukraine.
Germany’s Defense Ministry had initially planned to transfer a fourth installation by the end of the year, but the delivery schedule was adjusted for undisclosed reasons.
Ukraine expects to receive at least three more IRIS-T SLM launchers next year, along with additional deliveries later on.
Denmark recently placed an urgent order for the German IRIS-T air-defense system.
