The UK has successfully tested the Protector RG1 multi-purpose drone, which will replace the MQ-9 Reaper.

According to the UK Defense Journal, the flight test was a key stage in the drone’s third testing and evaluation phase.

Unlike its predecessor, the Protector RG1 will be able to perform tasks not only in the military but also for civilian needs.

The first drone of this type was delivered to the Royal Air Force at the end of October 2023.

The UK Ministry of Defense has ordered a total of 16 such drones, which will gradually replace 10 MQ-9A Reapers in the country’s air force.

It is worth reminding that the British Ministry of Defense has also decided to decommission the entire fleet of Watchkeeper Mk.1 reconnaissance drones.

The main feature of the Protector is the integrated weapon system from the British company BAE Systems, which allows the use of Paveway IV adjusted air bombs and Brimstone 2 multipurpose missiles.

The Protector is based on the MQ-9B SkyGuardian drone.

The remaining 15 drones will be transferred from the US company General Atomics to the UK in stages, and the delivery is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

MQ-9B SkyGuardian

The MQ-9B is an upgraded version of the MQ-9A with a wingspan of up to 24 meters and increased range and flight time. The drone can stay in the air for 40 hours.

Other features include a high-resolution EO/IR Full Motion Video sensor, an anti-icing system, and an automatic takeoff and landing system.

The system also includes a modernized ground control station designed for a crew of four.

The strike version of the MQ-9 has weapon mounts and can be equipped with AGM-114 Hellfire air-to-ground anti-tank missiles, Mark 82 corrective bombs, and other munitions.
