A training mission to provide prosthetics to Ukrainians suffered from the war, both military and civilians, has started in Lviv.
As part of the project, American medics will train Ukrainian specialists to deal with cases of complex amputations and prosthetics.
The project is being implemented by the IT company SoftServe and the Superhumans rehabilitation center, according to a press release obtained by Hromadske TV.
The mission started on August 21.
U.S. medics from the Maryland Medical Center Orthotics & Prosthetics spent the first 10 days of the mission at the Superhumans Center in Lviv, where they shared their expertise with Ukrainian colleagues and worked on prosthetics for patients.
Olha Rudneva, head of Superhumans, noted that the project will help train Ukrainian prosthetists and provide prosthetics to patients.
The goal of the first stage of the mission was to work with 10 patients, but in the end, medics managed to help 23 injured Ukrainians.
“In such a short period of time, the team has managed to double the number of patients who will leave the center with a completely new quality of life, which is fantastic. In the future, we will develop protocols that will improve the expertise among Ukrainian medics and help more and more patients,” says Anastasia Frolova, SoftServe Ukraine Country Manager.
American medics work with Ukrainian colleagues from all over Ukraine during this training. The next stage of the mission will be held in October, in Lviv. This time, the medics will work on upper limb prosthetics.
The mission will last until the end of the year. It will include several more stages of joint U.S.-Ukrainian exercises and will help to treat more than 30 patients.
The cost of the entire mission, funded by SoftServe, is $1 million.
As previously reported, the German defense company Rheinmetall has received an order for Forward Surgical Team stations for Ukraine.
