Several Latin American presidents have rejected US proposals to transfer Russian-made weapons to Ukraine in exchange for modern US-made counterparts.
Infodefense reported about this.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro ruled out such a possibility, and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva refused to transfer ammunition for Leopard 2 tanks to Germany.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador also sharply criticized sending military equipment to Ukraine.
“I told him that even if it was scrap metal, we would not give Russian weapons to continue the war in Ukraine,” the President of Colombia explained his answer to the commander of U.S. Southern Command.
On his social networks, the president of Colombia stated that “the best thing that can happen to humanity is peace between Ukraine and Russia”, and not the continuation of the conflict. “I will not contribute to the continuation of any war,” he said.
Currently, in addition to Colombia, the armies of Peru, Ecuador, Uruguay, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina have Russian or Soviet -made military equipment.
Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela also have large stockpiles of these weapons, mainly because they are politically aligned with Moscow.
Earlier Militarnyi reported that the United States was cooperating with Latin American countries to transfer to Ukraine the Soviet and Russian weapons in service with these countries.
The United States has asked six Latin American countries to supply Ukraine with their military equipment purchased from Russia, and offered to replace it with American weapons.
“Russia has allies in [the governments of – ed.] Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, but six other countries in the region have Russian military equipment.
The US is trying to encourage these six countries to donate Russian military equipment to Ukraine and replace it with American weapons,” the US military said at a meeting of the North Atlantic Alliance.
