The Prague City Hall has decided to transfer cars from impound lots, for which no one has come to claim, to the Ukrainian army.
According to Czech Radio, the vehicles will be transferred through the Czech Neohnuti charity organization.
The organization has been providing assistance to Ukraine for a long time. Volunteers find the vehicles, repair them, and modify them.
“They will be converted into ambulances or even all-terrain buggies,” the publication reported.
These are vehicles taken from the streets of Prague that have been sitting for years at the central impound lot in the Dubeč area.
“If no one claims them within three years, they are either put up for auction or sent to scrap.”
“Now they will get a second life: volunteers will repair them, process the paperwork, and send them to Ukraine,” government officials stated.
Six cars and two minibusses that were sitting in the impound lot are currently being prepared for Ukraine.
The Prague impound lot is constantly being replenished with vehicles, and the Prague government is already selecting the next cars for the volunteers.
Other countries have similar practices. Latvia is transferring vehicles confiscated from drunk drivers to Ukraine.
Back in 2023, the Latvian parliament unanimously passed amendments to the law, allowing the free transfer of vehicles confiscated by the state to the Ukrainian government.
This year, British volunteers, as part of the charitable initiative “Pickups for Peace,” also transferred 35 pickup trucks for the needs of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
