Portugal has received a second batch of A-29N Super Tucano turboprop attack aircraft.
Aviation photographer Paulo Mata posted a photo of the two aircraft on X.
The first batch arrived in the country on August 26, and flight tests of the first Portuguese Super Tucano started in July.
Before the official handover, the aircraft will be fitted with NATO-standard equipment in line with Portuguese Air Force requirements. OGMA, a joint venture between the Portuguese government and Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer, will perform the integration work.
The acquisition is seen as particularly relevant given the threat posed by Russian drones over Europe.
In September, Embraer and Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) proposed the Super Tucano as a platform for countering Shahed-type drones.
In December 2024, the Portuguese government approved the purchase of 12 A-29N Super Tucano aircraft from Embraer.
The contract is valued at about 200 million euros. In addition to the aircraft, the agreement includes a simulator for pilot training and logistical and technical support.
The project also emphasizes the involvement of Portuguese industry in adapting the aircraft to NATO standards and specifications.
The A-29N modification was developed to meet NATO requirements, making it compatible with Alliance systems and suitable for Portuguese Air Force missions.
The Portuguese defense minister first announced the plan to procure these aircraft in June 2023.
The new aircraft will serve with the 103rd Squadron, which previously operated Dornier Alpha Jet aircraft.
