The Polish Air Force begins guarding Slovak skies.
Mariusz Błaszczak, Minister of Defense of Poland, announced this.
On September 1, Polish F-16 fighter jets started operating in the country’s airspace.
“As of today, thanks to the agreement I signed last Saturday (August 27 – Ed.), yet another couple of Polish fighter jets will be protecting Slovakia’s airspace. We are supporting each other because together we are stronger,” Błaszczak wrote on Twitter.
The Ministry of Defense of Poland reported that the fighter jets will respond to aerial threats in the skies over Slovakia.
This Polish mission is supposed to strengthen the defense capabilities of the neighboring country, which is small in area, amid the war of aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
Along with Polish aircraft, Slovakia’s airspace will also be protected by fighter jets of the Czech Air Force.
On August 27, Slovakia signed an agreement under which both NATO member states will guard its skies.
Bratislava is decommissioning the Soviet MiG-29 fighter jets.
These combat aircraft should potentially be transferred for the needs of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Jaroslav Naď, Slovak Defense Minister, told the reporters that Bratislava is ready to send aircraft to neighboring Ukraine. However, no precise agreements have yet been made.
“There is political will, and it makes sense to help those who need help. This possibility is under consideration, and when the agreement is made, we will let you know,” Naď said.
