12 K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers and 5 K2 Black Panther tanks were unloaded at the port of Gdynia in Poland.
Mariusz Błaszczak, Minister of Defense of Poland, announced this.
“The Polish Army is getting stronger! This morning, another 12 K9 howitzers and 5 K2 tanks, which we ordered last year from South Korea, arrived at the port of Gdynia. This is a significant increase in the potential of our artillery and armored forces,” he wrote.
Thus, Poland received the entire first batch of 48 K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers in accordance with the agreement that the parties signed last August.
These self-propelled howitzers have been used; however, the outdated parts were replaced prior to being delivered to Poland. Domestic Topaz combat management systems and Fonet communication systems are being installed on the received artillery systems in Poland.
Also, the manufacturer’s markings on combat vehicles are changed from English to Polish.
Another 164 K9 Thunder for the armed forces of Poland are still in production. In total, the country will receive 212 artillery systems. The value of the agreement between Warsaw and Seoul is $2.4 billion.
As for the K2 Black Panther tanks, Poland received the first 10 tanks at the beginning of December last year. The tank agreement covers the delivery of 180 K2 Black Panther tanks during 2022-2025. The contract’s value is $3.4 billion.
Generally, the framework agreement on cooperation between Poland and South Korea assumes the purchase of 648 K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers and 980 K2 Black Panther tanks.
A contract to purchase FA-50 aircraft was also signed. At the beginning of March, the first aircraft for the Polish Air Force was demonstrated in South Korea.
