Poland is ready to transfer PT-91 Twardy tanks to Ukraine, which is its modernized version of the Soviet T-72M1 tank.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said about this in an interview with the Canadian TV channel CTV News.
Warsaw is also ready to hand over 14 German-made Leopard 2 main battle tanks to Kyiv.
“Poland sent 250 tanks as the first country half a year ago or even more than that. Right now, we are ready to send 60 of our modernized tanks, 30 of them PT-91. And on top of those tanks, 14 tanks, Leopard 2 tanks, from in our possession.
And we have said to our partners in Western Europe how many tanks we’ve already delivered, and I have quoted President Zelenskyy (to explain) how important it is in in this kind of war to have modern tanks,” Morawiecki said.
As previously reported, the Polish authorities submitted a request for the transfer of Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
Subsequently, the German government allowed the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and agreed to the re-export of these tanks from other countries.
“If we do not want Ukraine to be defeated, we must be very open and courageous in supporting Ukraine,” the head of the Polish government emphasized.
RT-91 Twardy is the main battle tank of the Polish army. These tanks were made on the basis of a licensed version of the Soviet Т-72М1 MBT.
The first prototypes were manufactured in 1993. Its basic version was mass produced at Bumar-Łabędy until 2002.
РТ-91 has modern fire control and communication systems. Tank and crew protection is further enhanced by in-built reactive armor of Polish production.
Tank is equipped with a locally produced 850 hp PZL-Wola S-12U diesel engine.
