The Polish government will begin discussing the possibility of deploying US nuclear weapons in the country.
Yevropeiska Pravda reported about this with reference to TVN24.
The discussions are due to begin on May 1, as Polish President Andrzej Duda invited Prime Minister Donald Tusk to the presidential palace that day.
The Polish government wants to reach a joint agreement on the deployment of nuclear weapons under NATO’s Nuclear Sharing Arrangements.
Duda noted that during his visit to the United States, the issue of Poland’s participation in the nuclear weapons program came up in conversations with politicians and the media.
I commented on this for a Polish newspaper. Prime Minister Donald Tusk then said that he would like to meet with me and discuss this topic. I replied that, of course, I was ready,” Duda said.
Prime Minister Tusk reacted positively to the meeting, as this issue is important for Poland’s security, but requires detailed discussion.
“This idea is very massive and very serious. I would like to know all the circumstances that prompted the President to make this statement,” Tusk said.
Under the Nuclear Sharing nuclear deterrence program, the United States has the ability to deploy its arsenal in some NATO countries.
Countries such as the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, and Turkey are already participants in this program.
Talks about the deployment of nuclear weapons in Poland started in 2022.
In addition, the United States also plans to establish additional storage bases in the United Kingdom.
