Poland’s Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW) has launched research and development work on a heavy infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) based on the chassis of the Krab self-propelled howitzer.
Military analyst Tomasz Kwasek reported on X that the concept of this vehicle was initially explored in the 2010s, but its implementation was unlikely at the time.
Now, it’s being funded through HSW’s own resources, according to an infographic published by Kwasek.
The company intends to attract external investors in the later stages after completing preliminary studies.
In August 2023, Poland’s Armaments Agency signed a framework agreement with a consortium comprising state defense group Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa and HSW.
The agreement provided for developing and procuring heavy IFVs for the Polish Army.
The first units were scheduled for delivery in 2025, though meeting this timeline remains uncertain.
Judging by the new infographic and preliminary information, the heavy infantry fighting vehicle will be created on the basis of a chassis structurally related to the Krab self-propelled howitzer.
The vehicle is expected to feature a remotely operated ZSSW-30 combat module, armed with either a 30mm or 40mm automatic cannon, a 7.62mm UKM-2000C machine gun, and a dual launcher for Spike-LR anti-tank missiles.
Additional modular armor may be installed to enhance protection.
The combat vehicle will be designed for a crew of three and will be able to transport eight dismounted troops.
The IFV will provide fire support in all weather conditions and offer a high level of ballistic and mine protection.
