The German Ministry of Defense plans to start preparing the country’s armed forces for a potential war by 2029.
Deutsche Welle reported on this.
According to the German Defense Minister, he plans to initiate preparations of the country’s armed forces for a possible war in the 2030s.
These preparations should be completed by 2029, but the plans may be slightly modified as appropriate funding from the German government is required.
“We must be ready for war by 2029,” Pistorius said during a questioning session in Germany’s lower house of parliament, the Bundestag.
He noted that Germany had a chance to prepare for the worst-case scenario, as a war in Central Europe was becoming more likely.
He noted that the country should have reintroduced compulsory military service, which had been suspended in 2011 due to the reorganization of the army.
“In an emergency, we need strong young women and men who can defend this country,” he added.
About half of German citizens favor reintroducing it, according to a survey by research institute Forsa in March.
The new guidelines replace a predecessor paper from 1989 and now address cyber threats and hybrid warfare.
Militarnyi previously reported that Germany had experienced problems due to the lack of a working military registration system for citizens in the Bundeswehr reserve.
Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, chairwoman of the Bundestag Defense Committee, criticized the fact that after completing their service in the German army, they had not been registered in the military registry.
