The US Department of War has placed approximately 1,500 soldiers from the 11th Airborne Division in Alaska on high alert due to protests in Minnesota.
This was reported by Reuters.
Two infantry battalions specializing in highly mobile operations are awaiting orders for a possible transfer to the state.
The reason for this step was the sharp escalation of protests and clashes that arose against the backdrop of a large-scale operation by immigration services.
The situation in the region escalated after the death of 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis on January 7. The woman died during an incident involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.
The Donald Trump administration has already expressed its willingness to invoke the Insurrection Act.
The White House justifies the potential intervention of the army by the need to protect federal personnel and property from attacks by protesters.
At the same time, Pentagon officials note that the president has the authority to deploy troops to protect federal facilities even without formally invoking the act.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has spoken out against the use of the regular army, stressing that it will only escalate the situation.
Meanwhile, Governor Tim Walz has already mobilized the Minnesota National Guard to maintain law and order.
Despite the preparation of paratroopers from Alaska, the final decision on their deployment to the Midwest has not yet been made — the units remain on standby.
Earlier, Militarnyi reported that US President Donald Trump had ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles after two days of protests triggered by immigration raids.
