Ukraine’s arms industry is building eight Bohdana self-propelled howitzers each month.

The New York Times learned this from its own sources.

In particular, the publication pointed out that Ukraine’s military had only one Bohdana artillery cannon in its arsenal at the time of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

“Now, Ukraine’s arms industry is building eight of the Bohdana self-propelled howitzers each month,” the publication says.

Although officials will not say how many they’ve made in total, the increased output signals a potential boom in the country’s domestic weapons production.

Last December, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced that the Ukrainian defense industry reached the production rate of six Bohdana self-propelled howitzers per month.

Ukrainian self-propelled howitzers are being produced in parallel with several modifications to increase the batch’s volume.

In addition, the manufacturer is also developing several more versions of the self-propelled howitzers.

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov first publicly reported the start of mass production of Ukrainian self-propelled howitzers in January 2023.

He stated that Ukraine has financed the serial production of the domestic Bohdana 155mm self-propelled howitzers. According to the Minister, the work started in the spring of 2022. Some critical parts are produced at their own sites abroad.

In December 2023, it was announced that about 30 2S22 Bohdana self-propelled howitzers had already been assembled for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

It was also reported that Ukraine was developing a trailer version of this 155 mm howitzer.
