Norway will provide Ukraine with a large amount of ammunition for mortars.
The Norwegian national public broadcasting organization NRK reported on this.
In total, the country will donate €42 million worth of mortar rounds, which Ukraine needs in large quantities, according to the Ministry of Defense.
“Ukraine is in great need of all types of ammunition and has asked specifically for what we are now transferring,” Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram told NRK.
In addition to mortar rounds, Norway has recently handed over a batch of hand grenades worth €4.7 million and ammunition for sniper weapons worth €260,000 to Ukraine.
The ministry also noted that despite Norway’s small stockpile of such weapons, the country is donating them because the most acute problems are currently occurring on the battlefield in Ukraine.
“There are great needs, and we are trying to survive in a difficult battle for Ukraine,” the Ministry of Defense said.
Separately, the Minister of Defense noted that in addition to helping Ukraine, Norway must also strengthen its own defense, as Russia is a threat to both the country and the entire European continent.
“Russia is the main threat to Norwegian and European security,” Gram said.
Militarnyi previously reported that the Norwegian government contributed a financial package to strengthen air defense and purchase 100 anti-aircraft missiles for Patriot systems.
The total financial package that the country has allocated within the German Air Defense Initiative is €240 million.
Part of these funds, namely €125 million, will be allocated for the joint procurement of MIM-104 anti-aircraft guided missiles. Another part of the funds will be used for future procurements under the German Air Defense Initiative.
