Following Germany’s transfer of Leopard 2 main battle tanks, two more countries stated their willingness to supply the tanks to Ukraine.
Militarny reported about this.
According to Norwegian media DN, Norway can transfer to Ukraine up to 8 Leopard 2 tanks out of 36 available in the armed forces. It is known that tanks in the Leopard 2А4 version are in service in this country. In the near future, the government also plans to decide on the purchase of new tanks.
The Netherlands is also considering providing Ukraine with 18 modern Leopard 2 main battle tanks, which they rented from Germany.
“We rented them, which means we can buy them, which means we can give them,” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte told FAZ in Brussels on Tuesday.
In 2011, the military leadership of the Netherlands decided to remove all 73 units of its Leopard 2A6 tanks. However, after the start of the Russian hybrid war against Ukraine, the country revised its policy and leased 18 Leopard 2A7 tanks from Germany.
The leasing agreement stipulated that the tanks belonged to the Bundeswehr, but could be used to defend the Netherlands if necessary. They are part of the 414 Tank Battalion, a German-Dutch unit based in Lochaide, Lower Saxony.
Earlier, the Militarny reported that after months of debate, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz decided to transfer Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
According to Spiegel, this means at least one company of Leopard 2A6 tanks (previously – 14 cars).
German tanks may be delivered from Bundeswehr depots. In the medium- to long-term prospect, other battle tanks from the manufacturer’s warehouses can also be ready for transfer.
Earlier, ABC News reported that, following the Ramstein meeting, 12 countries agreed to transfer Leopard tanks to Ukraine. They stated this with reference to a Ukrainian high-ranking official.
According to the source of the media, Ukraine expects to receive 100 Leopard tanks from the allies.
