In North Korea, training competitions were held among the Joint Forces of the Korean People’s Army.

These competitions showcased their latest tank, which has been designated in the West as the M-2020, as reported by armored vehicle researcher Andrii Tarasenko.

In addition to M-2020, the exercises involved tanks Chkhonma-216 and light multi-purpose American MD 500 helicopters.

In fact, the exact name of the tank is unknown – it was called so by the date of its first appearance in 2020. The characteristics of the new combat vehicle also remain unknown to the international community.

The tank visually resembles a mix of the Russian Armata and the American Abrams.

Tarasenko suggests that in the classic combat layout, the crew consists of four people; there is also ammunition for the first stage, which is located in a niche behind the tower; and there are also bouncer panels.

Probably, the crew is placed similar to the American Abrams: on the left in the tower there is a charger. This arrangement makes it possible to work more conveniently with ammunition in the niche behind the tower.

The commander and gunner are placed in the tower on the left. The commander has a combined sight; observation is carried out by turning the entire turret; that is, the device is not panoramic. The gunner has similar sights.

M-2020 is additionally equipped with a 30mm automatic grenade launcher and a launcher for two anti-tank missiles, which most likely have two positions: travel and combat.

An active protection system is installed on the tank, and on the sides of the tower there are two laser irradiation sensors and four radars. There are 12 counter-projectiles onboard for destroying incoming ammunition, ensuring all-around defense for the combat vehicle.

The placement of radars and missiles on the M-2020 remotely resembles the Chinese GL series APS. The tank, presumably, repeats the development of its predecessor, called Songun-915, which, according to some experts, corresponds to the Soviet modifications of the T-72.

The Korean tank received a smoothbore 125mm gun and a 1200 horsepower engine.

The exercises demonstrated dynamic protection of the sides and turret. It is believed to be designed to counteract tandem ammunition. In addition, the engine compartment of the tank, as well as the niche behind the tower, are covered with anti-cumulative grilles.
