Turkey has completed the qualification of the new MMT-76 machine gun, which has passed endurance tests with 250,000 rounds fired.
Makine ve Kimya Endüstrisi (MKE) reported that the work was performed jointly with the Defense Industry Secretariat, with consideration of the needs of the Turkish Armed Forces.
The MMT (Modern Makineli Tüfek) machine gun is made in 7.62×51 mm caliber.
The company noted that the sample has successfully passed 40 tests according to NATO standards and weighs only 8 kg, making it lighter than its counterparts.
The machine gun was first introduced in 2021 as a potential replacement for the outdated MG-3, which was manufactured in Turkey under a German license.
The Turkish Armed Forces use a fairly wide range of single machine guns.
In addition to the aforementioned MG-3s, which have been discontinued, they are also equipped with the American M60E3, the Belgian FN MAG, which MKE produces under the PMT-76 designation, and several versions of the Kalashnikov PKM machine gun.
In fact, the MMT-76 machine gun is a clone of the PKM. It uses the same long-stroke gas-piston action, a similar rotary bolt locking system, and the same tape-feeding scheme.
The main difference was the adaptation of the barrel and feed mechanism for the 7.62×51 mm NATO cartridge.
The machine gun’s barrel is quick-release and features longitudinal fins for improved cooling. The gas block is equipped with a manual gas regulator.
The MMT machine gun is equipped with a bipod and an adjustable stock. It has mechanical sights, and a Picatinny rail is mounted on the tape feeder cover for mounting day or night sights.
Earlier, Turkey developed special anti-drone ammunition for M2 Browning heavy machine guns.
