New satellite images reveal that the Russian ammunition depot, recently targeted by Ukraine, is still smoldering.
The image from September 19 was shared by Brady Afrik, Senior Media Associate for Foreign and Defense Policy at the American Enterprise Institute.
On the night of September 18, Russian authorities announced an evacuation from the town of Toropets in Tver Oblast.
A video taken by local residents captured continuous explosions and cannon fire, with flames visible hundreds of meters away on the horizon.
Toropets is home to a depot used for storing ammunition, missiles, and explosives.
A source in the SSU told BBC Ukraine that in that city, the Ukrainian Defense Forces “wiped out a large depot of the main rocket and artillery department of the Russian Defense Ministry.”
It is less than 500 km from the Ukrainian border to the 107th arsenal of the Main Missile and Artillery Directorate in Toropets. For example, the Ukrainian attack drone “Lyutyi” is capable of flying this distance.
On September 18, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported the alleged destruction of 54 drones in a number of regions. However, it did not report on the situation in the Tver Oblast.
The construction of the ammunition depot in Toropets was completed several years ago. According to estimates, 3.6 billion rubles (over $39 million) were spent on its construction.
The ammunition depot was built as part of a program launched by the Russian Defense Ministry in 2012 to improve the system of ammunition and explosives storage, which was intended to eliminate the deployment of such weapons in the open air.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the arsenal meets international standards, allows for the sheltering of missiles and ammunition from external influence, and ensures their safety.
As previously reported, in the Bryansk oblast, an unknown type of weapon struck a Russian military base and destroyed one of the buildings.
