The Dutch government is planning to strengthen its air defense with new NOMADS air defense systems.

The publication Army Recognition reported that the Netherlands was considering the purchase of up to 18 such systems.

For the Netherlands, the NOMADS system may be developed in a new configuration that will have an increased target area.

The Norwegian company Kongsberg only started mass production of the new NOMАDS air defense system in 2024.

Thanks to its compact module, the system, in addition to the launch system, also has a radar station used to detect and track air targets.

An X-band radar of the XENTA-M family manufactured by the Danish company Weibel Scientific was integrated into the system. The range of detection of air targets can reach 75 km.

NOMADS is equipped with two launch containers, each containing two anti-aircraft missiles.

The initial tests of the system were conducted with IRIS-T missiles from Diehl Defense, but the production of this missile is primarily intended for Ukraine.

Norway and Kongsberg decided to use Raytheon’s AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II missiles.

The SAM itself is developed on the tracked armored chassis of the ACSV G5 armored vehicle developed by the German company Flensburger Fahrzeugbau GmbH.

Its production is localized in Norway at Ritek’s facilities.

As previously reported, the German government is considering purchasing the Norwegian NOMADS air defense system for the needs of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. In addition, Germany will be able to provide Ukraine with IRIS-T missiles, which, together with the U.S. AIM-9X, can be used by the system.
