The components of Ukraine’s domestically developed Shershen surface-to-air missile system (SAM) have already been completed and tested with five different types of missiles.
This was stated by NAUDI Director Serhii Honcharov in a comment to Militarnyi at the World Defense Show 2026 defense exhibition.
In particular, in an official video released yesterday, February 12, 2025, the National Association of Defense Industries of Ukraine (NAUDI) demonstrated the system’s launcher and radar.
The radar unit for the system was displayed as a model at the Association’s booth, allowing it to be compared with the version shown in the released video, which is mounted on a mast rather than in a container.
As a reminder, in a comment to Militarnyi, NAUDI Director Serhii Honcharov spoke about the possibility of integrating virtually any radar into the system if required:
“A radar can be adapted to the system according to the customer’s requirements. There is no strict requirement that it must only be Thales, or only HENSOLDT, or Teledyne, Girafe, or any other specific radar. All of this can be adapted, and the control system is very flexible and at least three times cheaper than global counterparts,” Serhii Honcharov said regarding the integration of different radars into the system.
Therefore, this antenna unit was likely developed and tested as one of the configuration options for the air defense system.
As we previously reported, the Shershen surface-to-air missile system has already been tested with five types of missiles. These include both Soviet-era missiles and foreign-made ones, as well as promising Ukrainian-developed designs.
“Why five? Because we have test-fired five. If other types are needed for implementation, the necessary work will be carried out to adapt them, and they can also be used with this system,” said NAUDI Director Serhii Honcharov.
The photo of the launcher shows two R-27 missiles equipped with infrared homing systems, one of which has its protective cap removed. The image was likely taken during one of the testing stages of the system.
The demonstration mock-up, meanwhile, displayed a possible configuration carrying three R-27 missiles of an unspecified version (the missile exists in both the infrared-guided ‘T’ variant and the radar-guided ‘R’ variant).
Depending on the version of the R-27 missile, its engagement range in an air launch varies. This likewise affects its range when launched from a ground-based launcher.
