NATO countries have placed an order for 940 FIM-92 missiles for the Stinger man-portable air defense systems.
Natoaktual reported on this.
The contract was signed by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency at the NATO summit in Washington.
The missiles have been ordered for Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands, which should make up for the lack of missiles of this type after they are transferred to Ukraine.
The contract is worth more than $700 million and should provide these countries with missiles in the coming years.
The American company Raytheon, which manufactures and repairs FIM-92 missiles, will be responsible for the implementation of the agreement.
“It is impossible to ensure a strong defense without a strong defense industry,” Jens Stoltenberg said on the sidelines of the summit during the American Chamber of Commerce’s Industry Day.
Missiles for man-portable air defense systems will allow NATO countries to protect troops from Russian air assets at a range of up to 7 km, including attack and reconnaissance drones.
As part of the signed contract, the German Armed Forces will receive 506 FIM-92K Stinger Block I missiles at a cost of €395 million.
Germany is expected to receive half of the ordered missiles by 2028-2029.
Militarnyi previously reported that the U.S. had completed a refurbishment effort to upgrade and extend the shelf life of nearly 1,900 Stinger missiles that had previously been deemed unserviceable.
The refurbished missiles were placed back to the army inventory and can be used for training and combat use if necessary.
