Montenegro intends to join the European Union’s mission to train the Ukrainian military.

This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Montenegro at Radio Slobodna Evropa.

The Ministry recently approved participation in this mission, after Montenegro expressed its intention to provide Ukraine with another type of support and contribute to the common security and defense policy of the European Union.

The EUMAM mission was launched by the European Council in 2022 with the aim of assisting Ukraine by strengthening military capabilities.

The mission is authorized to provide individual, collective and special training for servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the EU member states.

“Currently, we are at the stage of implementing national procedures that should lead to a parliamentary decision on the participation of military personnel in this mission,” the Ministry of Defense said.

The decision on the use of army units as part of international forces is made by the Parliament of Montenegro on the proposal of the Defense and Security Council.

Members of the Montenegrin army will train Ukrainian soldiers in Germany.

The fact that Montenegro will join EU military assistance for Ukraine was also confirmed by Secretary of State of the Ministry of Defense Marko Markovic on April 10 at a meeting with Ukrainian Ambassador Oleh Herasymenko.

“Montenegro strongly supports Ukraine in its struggle to preserve the territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as the freedom of the Ukrainian people. It expresses its support and solidarity not only rhetorically, but also through specific political participation, as well as financial and humanitarian contributions,” the Ministry of Defense said.

So far, 24 EU member states have offered training and staff to Ukraine under EUMAM.

As previously reported, in 2023, the Montenegrin government declassified defense assistance data to Ukraine after some NATO members began to publish their data.
