As part of the celebration of U.S. President Donald Trump’s birthday and the 250th anniversary of the establishment of the U.S. Army, a parade featuring Abrams tanks will take place in Washington.
Reuters reported on this, citing U.S. officials.
It is noted that the event will cost between $25 and $45 million.
Reuters reminded that the various branches of the U.S. military take pride in their history and anniversary celebrations, which are called “birthdays,” across the United States and on bases worldwide.
The U.S. Army had long planned to move troops and equipment to the National Mall in Washington on June 14 as part of its anniversary celebrations.
The plans now also include a military parade, as the event coincides with Trump’s 79th birthday.
Two U.S. officials, speaking to Reuters on the condition of anonymity, shared that the final cost could reach up to 45 million dollars.
One official noted that this amount reflects several million dollars more than the original plan, which didn’t include the parade.
The Army intends to send approximately two dozen M1 Abrams main battle tanks to participate in the celebration.
These estimates do not account for additional costs Washington D.C. will incur, such as waste removal or road repairs damaged by the heavy tanks.
Reuters previously reported that, according to the plan, more than 6,500 military personnel, around 150 vehicles, and 50 aircraft are expected to arrive in the U.S. capital.
Critics have called the parade an authoritarian display of power, describing it as wasteful, especially considering that the Trump administration is cutting spending across the entire federal government.
