A local Belgian company is set to begin assembling American AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, according to a report by public broadcaster VRT NWS.
The move comes after a deal between U.S. defense giant RTX (Raytheon) and Belgian arms manufacturer FN Herstal, aimed at localizing part of the missile production process in Belgium.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the agreement includes the production of certain components and the final assembly of AMRAAM missiles in Belgium. No official information has been released so far.
The deal may be part of a joint procurement plan involving up to nine NASAMS air defense system batteries for Belgium and one for Luxembourg, to be acquired from the Norwegian manufacturer Kongsberg in cooperation with the Netherlands.
The primary missile used in this air defense system is the American AIM-120 AMRAAM medium-range air-to-air missile, manufactured by RTX.
