The Marinovka airfield in the Volgograd region of Russia is on fire after an attack by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
ASTRA reported this on Telegram, citing local residents.
The drone attack took place at night, at the same time the first footage was published after the strike on a military facility in the village of Oktyabrsky.
According to the online map of the NASA-FIRMS service, which tracks fires, there are four fires on the airfield’s territory.
According to Google Maps satellite imagery, one of the places of fire was the maintenance area, and the other was the warehouses on the airfield:
The Oko Gora Telegram channel reports that the other two fires are at an aviation armament depot and grass burning.
Local residents report that after the attack, explosions were heard at the airfield in addition to the fire, and the residents of the military station were evacuated. This means that the ammunition depot is burning.
In the morning, the governor of the Volgograd region confirmed the attack on the military facility:
“Last night, the air defense forces of the Ministry of Defense [of the Russian Federation] repelled a UAV attack on the territory of the Volgograd region near Marinovka, and some of the drones were destroyed. As a result of the UAV crash, a fire broke out on the territory of the Ministry of Defense facility,” Andriy Bocharov claimed.
According to open sources, the 11th Mixed Aviation Regiment, launched in 2015 on the basis of the 2nd aviation squadron, is based at the airfield.
The regiment includes a reconnaissance squadron flying Su-24MR aircraft and a bombing squadron flying Su-24M aircraft, redeployed from the Morozovsk airfield.
It was at this airfield that the Russians began to build airfield hangars to protect their aircraft from attack drones and missiles with cluster warheads:
The photo captures 12 new hangars that shelter Su-24 bombers and Su-34 fighter-bombers at the air base.
