Next week, Paris will host a meeting of European military chiefs from countries willing to join the peacekeeping efforts in Ukraine as part of security guarantees.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced this in his address to the nation on March 5.
He emphasized that for lasting peace in Ukraine, it is essential to implement safeguards that will prevent any future Russian aggression.
“Next week, we will bring together in Paris the chiefs of staff from countries ready to take responsibility in this crucial matter,” Macron stated.
The French president suggested that deploying European forces may be necessary to ensure lasting peace in Ukraine.
“This may involve the deployment of European troops, but it’s important to note that they will not be heading to the front lines. Instead, they will be stationed once a peace agreement is reached, to ensure its full implementation and compliance,” Macron explained.
He explained that France is actively collaborating with Ukraine, the UK, Germany, and several other European nations in this effort.
The list of countries to be represented in Paris has not yet been officially confirmed. However, nations such as Denmark, Canada, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and France have either expressed their readiness or have not ruled out the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine.
Macron emphasized that regardless of how swiftly peace is achieved in Ukraine, European nations must strengthen their ability to defend themselves and prevent any future aggression.
Today, Thursday, March 6, an extraordinary European Council meeting will take place in Brussels.
During the session, EU leaders will start crafting a framework for security guarantees for Ukraine, focusing on the post-war or truce period.
The discussions will also include the potential deployment of a European military contingent in Ukraine.
